Stuart, the handy man, came by yesterday to restring my clothes line, rehang a closet door and put some window guards in. He was a very genial fellow and enjoyed chatting with Phil while I walked into town to sign up with a local medical clinic and get our library cards. (Yes, we can download books here to our readers!) The librarian was pleased to show me histories of Howick and I'll be able to get information about our house, when it was a boarding home in 1900.
On my return Phil informed me that Stuart was asking about the US and our newsworthy people. He said, "Are Bill O' Reilly and R. Limbaugh really representative of the US people?" Stuart said when he first watched them he thought it was a comedy sketch with crazy people. But then he was told, "No they are real US news commentators." We gave him the online sites for Colbert and John Daily to watch for more in depth, accurate and informed news about the US. But we had to add that these are comedies, even if they are better news sources. We also told him about the newest study which indicates that people who watch Fox News are less informed for having watched it. How does one explain the US?
But getting around NZ has been marvelous with Google mapping. This is something the US has really done well. Our phone tells us where we should be going and if we disobey it takes all in stride and sends us in another direction to the same location. Phil is want to say, "How do it know?" I figure it's the hand of a deity. ;)
Had wonderful visit with long time US friends as guests over the weekend: a professor and his wife on a sabbatical in Dunedin, and Oregon wine vintners who were here visiting family. The topic of Google maps came up and we, all pretty well educated people, marveled at the wonderful accuracy. Then our professor friend told us about a Mad Magazine cover with an Apple map. Have attached the picture, it is worth a thousand words and hope that my siting Mad Magazine as the originator of the picture makes it all good.
